Business Intelligence Analyst / Developer

United Kingdom - London

Are you a BI Developer who wants to work for a well-established and creative online travel technology company? Do you have a passion for turning data into meaningful information? Does working on a premier analytics platform, backed by a cutting-edge data platform and scaling to hundreds of terabytes pique your interest? Do you want to work with (and learn how to use) the latest data technologies in Hadoop, AWS and Microsoft? If any of those are true…Expedia is looking for YOU!

The team at Expedia Inc. is looking for an expert, highly motivated, disciplined BI Engineer to join the Data Engineering (HDE) team. In this role, you will be responsible for the delivery of solutions on top of our Hadoop and AWS platforms and will play a key part in a massive technology overhaul. This entails working with the delivery team and business partners to understand requirements, design and develop solutions, and ultimately deliver results to the end consumers. Our team has many years of BI experience using a wide range of technologies, so we guarantee that you won't be bored and will learn a lot. We are also constantly looking for ways to improve our development methodologies and welcome fresh ideas and approaches.

What you’ll do:

  • Define, develop, document and maintain BI solutions with the top industry technologies and best practices.
  • Define, develop and review ETL processes and OLAP solutions using the Microsoft BI stack.
  • Define, develop and maintain BI reports using the best industry tools (e.g. Tableau, Power BI, etc.).
  • Contribute to ongoing improvement of quality assurance standards and procedures.
  • Develop and optimize solutions in multiple database environments (Teradata, Hadoop, SQL Server, etc.).

Who you are:

We do not believe in matching against a list of buzzwords - we look for smart people with good general programming skills as we believe that creative developers can learn new technologies quickly and well. However, it wouldn't hurt if you have experience with some of the following (or at least an interest in learning them):

  • Strong background working with extremely large data sets in a Data Warehousing, ETL and Business Intelligence environment.
  • Have a good understanding of dimensional modelling for high volume data marts (e.g. Kimball methodology, etc.).
  • Strong SQL skills.
  • Experience working in an Agile/Scrum delivery team environment.
  • Practical knowledge and experience of management systems (e.g. Jira) and source control technologies (e.g. Stash).
  • Strong aptitude to learn and adapt to new technologies and processes.
  • Knowledge of AWS applications (S3, EC2, EMR, etc) or cloud database technologies (Redshift, Azure AS, etc.) is a big plus.
  • Unix skills would be a plus.

What we offer:

  • An environment where elegant, clean, maintainable code is favoured over messy hacks.
  • A friendly, smart team who are keen to share their knowledge and learn new things.
  • A chance to work with massive data sets numbering literally billions of items and approaching a petabyte in total size.
  • Competitive salaries and many growth opportunities within the company.
  • A comprehensive suite of benefits including private health insurance, pension plan, dental benefits, gym memberships and much more.
  • Travel discounts for employees as well as their friends and families.
